About the FOLD

The Festival of Literary Diversity (FOLD) launched May 2016 and expanded to include a book festival exclusively celebrating underrepresented children’s authors, illustrators and storytellers in 2019. For the past two years, the FOLD Kids Book Fest has been held entirely online. This year, the new multi-modal event will include over 20 events from November 8-12; the festival will host live virtual events from November 8-10 in our Virtual Clubhouse with live in-person events taking place at the Brampton Civic Centre from November 10-12. All virtual events will be available to watch and re-watch until December 12, 2022.

Festival Tracks

ELEMENTARY

Events designed for elementary students include entertaining and interactive portions delivered in shorter segments to enjoy live or on-demand, depending on the needs of the students.

MIDDLE GRADE

From workshops to interactive, high-energy battles, the festival’s middle grade events will engage students by offering a variety of events that will spark new insight on the incredible power of storytelling.

TEENS

The festival’s teen events feature some of the most exciting names in children's literature. These events also provide opportunities for teens to consider important questions regarding their personal journey and career path.

EDUCATORS

In addition to sessions and activities designed for classes, educators can take advantage of workshops and panel discussions to support their professional development.

IN PERSON EVENTS

This year’s festival includes free in-person events in Brampton, Ontario at the Brampton Civic Centre, across from the Bramalea City Centre mall. In-person events include opportunities for readers and writers of all ages to connect through important discussions and performances.

Ainara Alleyne is a 13-year-old elementary student from Hamilton Ontario. Ainara curates the Instagram page @ainarasbookshelf, where she highlights books for young people whose authors and main characters are Black, Indigenous, people of colour, differently abled and other underrepresented minorities. Ainara posts reviews, recommendations, and author interviews in an effort to share diverse stories with a broader audience. She believes that by experiencing other cultures and perspectives through books, we can not only acknowledge our differences but be able to understand and embrace them.

S. K. He is also an Assistant Professor at the Department of Ecology and Evolutionary Biology at the University of Toronto. Soren’s research examines the effects of climate change on lakes, and how changes in lakes can influence their greenhouse gas emissions to the atmosphere.

In 2020, She began a series on Instagram (@AlyssaGTyghter) titled #HerstoricallySpeaking where she tackled Canadian Black History, Indigenous Stories, and other racialized communities in Canada. Her current research focuses of Black girlhood, identity, and belonging in Canada.

Hetxw'ms Gyetxw, also known as Brett D. Huson (he/him/his), is from the Gitxsan Nation of the Northwest Interior of British Columbia, Canada. Growing up in this strong matrilineal society, Brett developed a passion for his people's culture, land, and politics and a desire to share their knowledge and stories. Brett has worked in the film and television industry for over 16 years and is also a volunteer board member for such organizations as Ka Ni Kanichihk and sakihiwe Festival. The award-winning series Mothers of Xsan is Brett’s first series of books and part of a larger vision he has in sharing the worlds of the Gitxsan Nation. As Brett continues creating new projects, he is also working with the Prairie Climate Centre.

FOLD Kids Book Fest runs November 8-12 and includes both virtual and in-person events. Our Virtual Clubhouse will host live virtual events from November 8-10, accessible with a virtual pass. In-person events will take place November 10-12. While the in-person events are free, pre-registration is required for all in-person to secure seating. A few seats at each event will be remain available for drop-ins.
To attend events in our Virtual Clubhouse – live or on-demand – attendees will need to purchase a virtual pass. In-person events are free but registration is required.
The in-person events are free, but each in-person event requires registration in order to ensure proper and safe seating. Registering for an event will allow us to communicate with guests regarding any last-minute changes. While registration is strongly encouraged, walk-in seats will be available for every in-person event on a first come, first serve basis.
A virtual pass costs $20 and allows you access to our Virtual Clubhouse, which includes an interactive scavenger hunt, live events, on-demand events and more. A bundle of five passes is $75. Some boards are purchasing a board pass, which allows teachers to register, free of charge, with their board-assigned code. Peel District School Board teachers should check their message board for their registration code.
We will try to keep an updated list on our website at thefoldcanada.org/educators. Last day to purchase a board-wide pass is October 20. As of October 1, Peel District School Board, Halton District School Board, York Catholic Region District School Board, Renfrew County School Board, and Waterloo Region District School Board had confirmed passes.
If the cost of a virtual pass is prohibitive, please fill out the Patron Pass form, and a virtual pass will be made available.
Virtual passholders will gain access to our Virtual Clubhouse which includes an auditorium featuring more than twenty events especially designed for educators and classrooms, an exhibit hall with a live chat features and helpful resources, and a customized resource room for additional support material. All virtual passholders will receive a festival book list and will have access to an educator resource guide, which provides pre- and post-event activities four school group events.
You can login in to the Virtual Clubhouse for the first time as soon as you register. However features like the Exhibit Hall and the Resource Room will not open until November 5. Live virtual events with live chat capabilities will begin on November 8 and will run until November 10. For live events, we recommend logging in to the platform 10 mins before the event. The event will go live (meaning you’ll be able to click on the event video) roughly 3 mins before start time to give people time to enter.
Most of our virtual events are initially offered live – meaning they become available on a specific day at a specific time and include the opportunity to chat live with other attendees, the hosts, and the authors. On-demand events are events that are pre-recorded or have already happened. They can be watched and re-watched until December 12 with a standard virtual pass.
Anyone with a virtual pass will be able to watch all of the videos on-demand until December 12, 2022.
